Don’t limit your sustainble living to just what you eat, but what you use. Cleaners and beauty supplies are hazardous to our health and the environment so it is a good idea for the planet and your own body that you think before you buy.
Food is important to remember to always try and eat local/organic/fair trade/sustainably, but one aspect of sustainable living we all forget about is the cleaning supplies, cosmetics, and soap we use. The problem with traditional beauty and cleaning supplies is the fact that 1. There are negative environmental impacts and 2. Negative health impacts. All of the toxins used to make the items we use are disposed of improperly into the earth and are also absorbed into our bloodstream by the pores of our skin and through inhalation of the item. Some toxins we should avoid that are commonly found in our beauty products are Phthalates, parabens, sulfates, Synthetic fragrances, Formaldehyde, DEET, Aluminum, and many more. There are thousands more but there are ways to avoid all the extra chemicals that are in the products we use. First, check the various lists of toxic chemicals that affect us online. Natural body healing, simple organic, less toxic guide(cleaning), less toxic guide (personal) and simply by a Google search. Visiting sites that list safe products or green products is another easier approach than reading ingredients and trying to remember which ones are bad and which ones aren’t. Some useful sites are Certified Green Cosmetics, Safe Cosmetics Org, Earth Easy non-toxic cleaners, EPA environmental labeled products and more. Google searching “green/safe cleaning/beauty products” is a sure way of finding which companies are actually ‘natural’, organic, environmentally friendly, or non-toxic. The third way to insure the products you use are environmentally friendly or safe can be done by making them yourself. It may sound like a stretch but it is easy to do and they really work! Some examples are:
Again, Google can be your best friend when you are looking for recipes of making your own products. All you have to do is google “recipes for homade _____”.
Some of my favorite products I’ve been using is Tom’s toothpaste/mouthwash, Dr.Bronners soaps, Burts bees chapstick, and Avalon Organics shampoo/conditioner. There are so many options, you just need to find the products that work for you.
Some green cleaning products i’ve used are Meyers, Seventh Generation and Sun & Earth.
